Everybody enjoys their leisure time in different ways. Some prefer to sail, surf, water ski or swim because of their love of water. Others prefer to spend their free time taking the family out to the country with a well filled picnic hamper and a cricket set or football to have a game in order to work off lunch. We are lucky in this country to have so many different options available to us for the way we spend our leisure hours. Sports minded people also have a wide range of choices of games to play whether it is played indoors or outdoors.
Many people learn how a game is played simply by being a spectator at games for a length of time, and then suddenly decide to play themselves. They have the basic knowledge of the game but may have to learn more about the rules of the sport they are choosing to play. Indoor sports have become quite popular perhaps because they are mostly non contact sport, and played in a comfortable atmosphere where there is even a cafeteria where you can also enjoy a chat over coffee later. There is always someone available to teach you the rules if you are a newcomer to the game you wish to play.
Indoor netball is much like basketball, throwing the ball through a hoop to score a goal. However in netball a backboard is not used, so shots through the hoop have to be skilfully aimed to score. The court used to play netball is a little bigger than the basketball court, and unlike basketball there is no dribbling of the ball around the court. Players with assigned positions cannot leave their area without a penalty being called. Once a player has the ball they can only take one and a half steps before passing the ball to another player. Goalkeepers must try to prevent the opposite team from gaining a score, but must stay at least a metre back from the one who is attempting the shot.
A game usually lasts an hour or so and is divided into four lots of ten minutes play times. If you think you would like to play but are not familiar with the rules of the game approach one of the indoor sports clubs and ask one of the staff for help. They will be only too happy to help you learn and get you into a team to get started. You will thoroughly enjoy yourself and make some new friends as well, so it is worth the effort to visit the club. Who knows ? You may end up being the team star.
